Stages of development
1932-1933 – the beginning of the movement
In order to promote Catholic Action, the Galizia Metropolita Andrea set up the Ukrainian Youth Catholic Action (UYCA). On the occasion of the Holy Year 1933 proclaimed by Pope Pius XI, he organized a number of youth congresses with the motto ‘Ukrainian Youth for Christ’ in various parts of Galizia In fact, the name of the association – Ukrainian Youth for Christ _ comes from the motto of the biggest youth congress which was attended by about 100,000 young people. This was held in Leolpoli, Ukraine, on 6 May 1933, under the patronage of the Metropolita Sceptytskyj. The great success of the Leopoli Youth Congress drew the attention of all the Ukrainian parishes spread all over the world. As a result all Ukrainian Academic Centres set up Catholic Action Groups wherever they were.

I. 1939-1990 – the diaspora period
After the Second World War, the Ukrainian nation came under the power of the communist totalitarian regime. As a result the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church was suppressed and thousands of priests, religious and lay people were sent to concentration camps. Under these circumstances the Ukrainian Youth for Christ was transferred abroad. During the period 1939 to 1990, the Ukrainian Youth for Christ organized congresses, meetings and festivals in various parts of the world: Europe, North America, South America and Australia

II. 1990-2005 – the present period
At the beginning of the 90’s, the idea of the Ukrainian Youth for Christ was brought back to Ukraine. On the 7-8 September 1990, through the combined efforts of religious communities, lay people, the Ukrainian community abroad and the members of “the catacomb church”, a big Ukrainian Youth for Christ Congress was organized in Leopoli. This time, there were about 40,000 participants. This marked the beginning of a spiritual and national revival of the Ukrainian nation. Some time after this Congress, on the 17 September 1990, the Ukrainian Youth for Christ Association, as we know it today, was set up in Leopoli, Ukraine.

Today UYC has a number of members in Galizia and in East Ukraine. There were four stages in the Association’s recent developments:
• 1990 – 1993: considerable help was given to the Ukrainian Greek-Catholic Church after its coming out of “the catacomb period” and ecclesial structures were set up again.
• 1994 – 1999: the realization of reciprocal understanding among the Churches based on the principle of “ecumenism from the grassroots”, that is creating possibilities of direct contact, communication and cooperation among youth in the different Churches. In 1999, a great ecumenical meeting was held in Kyiv.
• 2000 – 2005: activities, based on Christian morals, aimed at finding solutions for social problems and at increasing youth participation in social projects, were organized.

Projects
Today, in view of the fact that the social protection of youth in our country is very precarious, most of our projects have a social target. The laws and state social programs in this field leave much to be desired. UYC is responsible for the following projects:
1. The upkeep and development of the Christian youth centre in Leopoli which was opened in 1999. It is the only Christian centre in Leopoli which is open to youth from all the Churches. The centre already offers the following services: annual courses of spiritual colloqui; training for youth leaders; a library which houses 3000 volumes; a choir and a drama club. When the reconstruction of the building is completed, this will house a gymnasium, a shop for selling handmade articles and a centre which offers support to young people who are facing problems (abortions, drugs, violence…).
2. The publication of a journal Viruju (I believe) which is addressed to all Christians in general but especially to youths. The journal has a circulation in all Ukraine.
3. The evangelization of young people, by young people themselves, in Leopoli’s outlying regions in Ukraine. This project is part of the commitment for the development of a Christian society. It is a very difficult project to undertake due to the fact that it has to be carried out in the countryside where public activities for young people are minimal because of the many difficulties which prevail.
